Bamenda University Students Stranded at Home
Cameroon newly created University of Bamenda is up till date yet to go operational, even though thousand of students have already registered at the institution for the 2011-2012 school year. Many students remain stranded as the opening date and start of classes at the University of Bamenda UNIBA remain uncertain.
As of now, many of the students who enrolled or submitted their documents for enrollment into the institution are still waiting at home for the university to open its doors. Many students rushed to enroll into the institution after the Minister of Higher Education Jacques Fame Ndongo announced in re-assurance in later last year that the University of Bamenda was to go operational by January 2012.
Assurance which was further more consolidated by a communiqué from the vice-chancellor of the university Professor Edward Tafah, calling on prospective students to submit their complete files for admission into the institution latest December 30, 2011.
For those students who only seek admission into the University of Bamenda, they are starting to regret to have put all their hopes in the Bamenda dream university, and may go for the whole school year without any studies if the university finally does not go operational, as it is a little too late to apply for admission into other state universities.
While many of the already registered students with the university awaits for classes to start, the Minister of Higher education has instead extended the admission period into the institution indefinitely, raising fears among the students that the university might not go operational this school year after all.
The University of Bamenda, or UNIBA whose creation was announced by the head of state Paul Biya on his famous and controversial visit to Bamenda, is supposed to supplement the lone Anglo-Saxon University of Buea in providing English based and styled education to Cameroonians, and its creation was received with a lot of euphoria. But with many of the recruited lecturers still awaiting to be placed, and the university of Bamenda boosting of only two faculties – the faculties of Science and Health Sciences, with the Institute of Commerce and Management and a rusty old building it inherited from National Polytechnic in Mile 3 Nkwen, which is yet to receive any real innovation, many people in Bamenda are beginning to think that the president decreed the creation of the university under political pressure, and without giving a though about it financing, and as of now is still a dream yet to come true.
